As part of a visit to the UK about promoting Düsseldorf after Brexit, Düsseldorf’s Oberbürgermeister, Dr. Thomas Geisel, visited Reading today.
In Reading, he joined our Mayor of Reading Deborah Edwards. representatives of the Reading Düsseldorf Association and members of Reading UK CIC for a tour of the Reading Abbey ruins, followed by dinner. During the discussion, participants confirmed their shared wish that the connection between our two cities should not be affected by Brexit, and to continue existing projects together and give them a fresh start.
“The city friendship between Reading and Düsseldorf is one of the oldest links in Europe. Ever since 1947, people from both cities have been meeting one another regularly, becoming friends and exchanging visits. Not even Brexit will change anything about that”, declared Oberbürgermeister Geisel. “The City of Düsseldorf will commit itself to continuing the exchanges between schools and the sporting, cultural and business exchanges in a way that is as unbureaucratic as possible.”
